Pole end

This iron pole end for the yoke of a wagon was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used between 80 and 100 AD.

Iron pole ends for the yoke of a wagon, from Newstead, Roxburghshire

Wooden yokes, wagons and carts from this period rarely survive, but must have been used from an early time. Often all that is left are metal fittings and bindings.
