Spindles of wood
Add to album

These two wooden spindles were found at the Roman fort of Newstead in Roxburghshire and a native settlement at Buiston Crannog, Ayrshire. They were used to spin yarn.

Despite the fact that these spindles were used at least four centuries apart, they are remarkably similar in form.

Long thin spindles, used to spin yarn, rarely survive since they were often made of wood. Instead the spindle whorls, heavy, pierced objects made of more durable materials which acted as weights, provide the main evidence for this common activity.
