Bolt with Loop

This iron bolt with attached loop was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. The bolt was for attaching to woodwork and the loop was for securing a rope or similar item. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The iron bolt was forged with an integral loop. It is square sectioned, with a square 'washer' now rusted to the end of the bolt.

The Roman army garrisoned at Newstead fort required the services of smiths, woodworkers and other craft specialists. This iron attachment - a simple, utilitarian item - could have been used to secure a variety of objects, including small ropes or hooks.
