Binding

This iron binding was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used to fasten timber, possibly from a wagon, sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The Romans depended greatly on horses. Materials needed to set up and provision the forts in Scotland were hauled over short and long distances by horses. Often all that survives of the wagons and carts are metal fittings and bindings.
