Whetstones were used to sharpen metal edges of tools and weapons. This example is one of a large number found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

Whetstone from Newstead

A large number of whetstones, most made from flattened river stones, were found at Newstead in various sizes and shapes. They were used by smiths in their work, as well as by individuals for keeping knives and weapons sharp.
