Scythe
Add to album

This iron scythe was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used between 80 and 100 AD.

The scythe has an anchor-shaped rivet at the place where the blade joins the tang, used to fasten the blade to a long wooden handle. It shows signs of wear.

Various agricultural implements, including scythes, sickles, rakes and hoes were found at the Roman fort of Newstead, suggesting that some cultivation occurred near the site.
