Pruning hook

This iron pruning hook was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It could have been used for a wide range of tasks including pruning, gathering leaves or chopping sticks. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD.

The pruning hook has a socket for attaching it to a wooden handle. The very acute angle of the blade is a result of later damage.

Various agricultural implements, including scythes, sickles, rakes and hoes were found at the Roman fort of Newstead, suggesting that some cultivation occurred near the site.
