Add to album

This iron knife with a bone handle was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used, perhaps for filleting, sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

Both handle and blade of the knife are worn, and the bone has split. It is without decoration.

A number of knives of various shapes and sizes were found at Newstead, presumably designed for a variety of purposes. Some, like this one, have bone handles preserved.
