Knife

This iron knife with bone handle comes from the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD. Knives such as these could have been used in the preparation and consumption of food.

Iron knife with a bone handle, possibly used to open oysters, from Newstead

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman forts in Scotland. Officers in the Roman army possessed better cooking and serving equipment than the lower ranks.
