Knife

This iron knife with bone handle comes from the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD. Large knives of this type could have been used for butchery, perhaps as filleting knives.

Filleting knife blade of iron with a bone handle, from Newstead, Roxburghshire

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman forts in Scotland.
