Axehead
Add to album

This iron axehead was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort of Newstead in Roxburghshire. It is from a lightweight carpenter's axe, and was used between 80 and 180 AD.

The axehead is in very good condition. The socket hole for the haft is near the squarish butt end.

The Roman army employed professional carpenters for the many woodworking tasks involved in building and maintaining structures and in providing equipment for the troops. The Roman carpentry kit was specialised.
