Javelin head
Add to album

A javelin is a light spear which was thrown. This iron javelin head was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It would have formed part of the equipment of the auxiliary cavalry.

The edge of the blade is damaged.

Roman spears were either thrown or thrust at a target. The two functions led to differences in manufacture, with throwing spears (javelins) usually lighter. The auxiliary cavalry carried either throwing spears or the heavier thrusting lance.
