Sword

This iron sword with bronze hilt guard was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire.

The bronze hilt guard is an Iron Age type. The end of the blade is missing.

Although from a Roman site, the sword is a native type. Many auxiliary troops used local styles of equipment and many troops were recruited locally.
