This leather shoe, known in Latin as a caliga, was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was worn between 80 and 100 AD.

Although the openwork upper looks very flimsy and is badly damaged, this was the standard military shoe in the 1st century AD.

A variety of shoes have been found in Roman Britain, included examples where the soles were nailed or stitched to the bottom layers, sandals and one-piece shoes. Surviving where conditions are favourable, they show changing fashions over time.
