This leather cover was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. Its exact function is unknown. The cover dates from between 80 and 180 AD.

The poorly preserved piece of leather has a semicircular hole at one side, surrounded by stitch marks. On the other side there are marks of a fork-shaped patch.

The Romans army had specialist leatherworkers who produced a wide range of objects, many of very high quality. They mass-produced hides to meet the needs of the army. There were even factories for tanning leather.
