Piece of a wooden gateway

This piece of a wooden gateway was found at the site of the Roman fort of Oakwood in Selkirkshire. It is a rare survival of a wooden gateway from the Roman period. It was used between 80 and 105 AD.

Gatepost timber from Oakwood, Selkirkshire

The Romans valued wood highly. They had specialist carpenters, with their own workshops equipped with a wide variety of highly specialised tools. New forts required wooden gates and houses, internal fittings, containers and utensils.
