Handle

This bronze handle from a wine flagon, partly inlaid with silver, was found during ploughing at Cairnholy in Kirkcudbrightshire. It was a valuable object obtained from the Romans, either as a diplomatic gift or as a result of trade.

The handle is decorated with the head of Medusa and a deer.

Although the Roman occupation did not result in the native population becoming Romanised, certain Roman habits such as drinking wine appear to have been adopted in some cases, in order to show off high status.
