This piece of a gilt bronze mount was found at Monkersgreen in Orkney. It is of Anglo-Saxon style, and probably made its way to Orkney as loot from the Anglian-controlled areas of southern Scotland. The mount dates from between 800 and 950.

The mount is decorated with interlaced beasts below a geometric border, carved in a style typical of that used by Anglo-Saxon craftsmen.

The Northumbrian Angles gained control of southern Scotland in the 7th century, and controlled to the Firth of Forth until into the 10th century. Finds of monumental sculpture and some portable objects reflect this political control.
