Strap junction

This bronze strap junction is one of two found at Stanhope in Peeblesshire along with an armring and Roman saucepan. Both strap junctions were probably used on harnesses sometime between 100 and 300 AD.

The strap junction has a loop behind the ornament through which the harness reins were fed. There is little sign of wear, but the ring is cracked. Both mounts from Stanhope were of identical design, though of different size.

Leather on harnesses rarely survives, but the metal fittings and ornaments are often preserved. Strap junctions come in many forms, some quite elaborate and decorative.
