From Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbrightshire

Strip
Add to album

This engraved bronze strip was found at Balmaclennan in Kirkcudbrightshire, in a hoard containing a mirror and pieces of sheet bronze mounts wrapped in four cloth parcels. It may be a product from a northern or eastern English workshop.

The crescent-shaped strip originally had beading around the edges, attached with rivets, now mainly missing. The engraved design of spirals was made with a compass.

The sheet bronze mounts in the Balmaclellan hoard may have been fittings for a wooden box, though the exact placements are open to conjecture. The pieces vary in technical and artistic quality, though this strip is generally considered first rate.
