Five flint arrowheads

These five flint arrowheads were found at Springwood at Kelso in Roxburghshire. They are fine arrowheads used for hunting, or in combat, or both, sometime between 2300 and 1800 BC.

The arrowheads all had barbs and tangs. The barbs helped them stick in their prey and the tangs attached them to the wooden arrowshafts. One barb is broken on the top left arrowhead, and both on the bottom right one.

For at least 5000 years people in Scotland have hunted for sport and prestige as well as to obtain food. Such was the prestige attached to archery skills that some men were buried with their kit.
