Ceramic pot found in a grave

This ceramic pot was found at Ratho in Midlothian. It was placed within a grave, probably containing an offering of food or drink, sometime between 2200 and 1650 BC.

The pot has been decorated over most of its exterior surface with incised lines. It is damaged at the top.

From around 2500 BC, individual burial, usually in a cist, a rectangular stone box-shaped grave, became popular over much of Scotland. In most cases, the only item to be buried with the dead was a pot containing an offering of food or drink.
