Urn, bracelets and rings

This coarse, undecorated ceramic urn was found at Duff House at Banff in Banffshire. It contained cremated bones and unburnt gold jewellery. The wealthy burial dates from between 1200 and 1100 BC.

The two large bracelets and one of the three smaller penannular gold rings are simple round-sectioned rods with plain terminals. The other two smaller rings are made of three and six round-sectioned rods respectively.

By around 1750 BC, in mainland Scotland, cremation had become the favoured funerary custom. Grave goods were rare, and generally modest. Very few burials are known from the period 1200 to 800 BC, but, of these, several contained gold jewellery.
