Beads of cannel coal
Add to album

These six cannel coal beads were found in a burial mound somewhere in Lanarkshire along with three amber beads. They were probably produced locally, imitating the imported amber beads, sometime between 2450 and 2000 BC.

The beads, like the amber examples also found, are in the form of miniature battle axes, a symbol of power in the late third and second millennium BC,

The only significant source of good quality jet occurs around Whitby in Yorkshire, although jet-related substances like cannel coal and lignite are known from several places in Scotland. Jet was used in the Bronze Age for high status objects.
