Necklace (fragments)

This incomplete jet necklace was found with human remains, including hair, in a cist burial at Bogheadly at Fetteresso in Kincardineshire. It was an expensive prestige item for ostentatious display, imported from Yorkshire sometime between 2300 and 1800 BC.

Only 35 beads, six spacer plates and a triangular fastener survive from the necklace. It has been reconstructed in the picture to give a general idea of the arrangement. The necklace was old and may have been incomplete when buried.

The only significant source of good quality jet occurs around Whitby in Yorkshire, although jet-related substances such as cannel coal and lignite are known from several places in Scotland. Jet was used in the Bronze Age for high status objects.
