Ceramic urn and a bronze blade
Add to album

This ceramic urn was buried with cremated remains and the small bronze blade at Shuttlefield at Lockerbie in Dumfriesshire. The burial dates from sometime between 1500 and 1200 BC.

The lower part of the urn has been restored. The leaf-shaped blade has a midrib on each face and a tanged end. It is slightly damaged.

By around 1750 BC, in mainland Scotland, cremation had become the favoured funerary custom. Grave goods were rare, and generally modest. Sometimes, as here, they were kept separate from the pyre, but in other cases they were burnt with the body.
