Early ceramic pot

This ceramic pot was found at a stone circle at Old Keig in Aberdeenshire. It may have been associated with the reuse of this sacred site as a cemetery, sometime between 1400 and 700 BC.

The pot is undecorated, and has been partly restored. It is coarse, flat-based and roughly bucket-shaped.

Cremated bones and sherds of coarse pots including this one were found during excavations of the stone circle. They indicate the reuse of this sacred site for burial purposes, several centuries after its construction.
