Jar

This ceramic jar was found at Eilean an Tighe on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. It is an early example of ceramic production in Scotland, made sometime between 3300 and 2800 BC.

The deep jar was decorated with lines and burnished to give it a glossy finish. It has been restored.

The earliest pottery in Scotland was introduced to Scotland around 4000 BC. Most are plain, with broad similarities over geographically wide area. As time passed, various distinctive styles became popular in different parts of the country.
