Beakers were fancy pots for drink or food. These examples were placed in graves at Thornton at Innerwick in East Lothian and at Ellon in Aberdeenshire sometime between 2300 and 1800 BC. They probably contained an offering for the afterlife.

The beaker from Thornton is of a normal size, but was found in a smaller than usual cist containing a cremation of a three- to five-year-old child.
