Pot

This small ceramic pot was found lying upside down on the side of a sand and gravel knoll at West Skichen at Carmyllie in Angus. It had probably come from a cremation burial. The pot dates from between 2050 and 1500 BC.

The pot is a miniature version of a type of pot known as a Food Vessel Vase. It is decorated with impressed dots and lines in a herringbone pattern, and has a hollow ridge and four small lugs half way up its body.

By around 1750 BC, in mainland Scotland, cremation had become the favoured funerary custom. Usually, the cremated remains were buried in a large urn, and sometimes small accessory vessels such as this one are found.
