Three iron hooks

These three hooks are are part of a hoard of native and Roman objects placed in a cauldron and deposited in Carlingwark Loch in Kirkcudbrightshire sometime between 80 and 200 AD.

Iron double hook from Carlingwark Loch

Classical authors describing the Celtic religion wrote about acts of sacrifice. In return for favours, large amounts of material wealth were offered. Archaeological finds of large collections of metalwork, like the Carlingwark hoard, confirm the accounts.
