Anvil & Punches
Add to album

This iron anvil and two iron punches are part of a hoard of native and Roman objects placed in a cauldron and deposited in Carlingwark Loch in Kirkcudbrightshire between 80 and 200 AD.

The anvil tapers towards a point, now broken, which would have been set into a wooden block or into a larger metal base.

It is often difficult to distinguish between a Roman and native tool. The Romans had better access to raw materials and craftsmen, but the types of tools were similar. Tools were also traded and copied. Iron was a valuable resource.
