Ingot
Add to album

This bronze ingot was found next to Stack House at An Ard at Gairloch in Ross and Cromarty. It could have been used to make a bronze weapon or tool such as a dagger or small axehead. The ingot probably dates from between 2300 and 2000 BC.

The dagger-shaped ingot is made of bronze containing arsenic. One edge is badly nicked.

Early metalworkers made a range of tools and weapons from bronze. Some were cast in clay or stone moulds. Others were hammered from ingots. Ingots were also useful for transporting metal between places.
