Axeheads

These bronze axeheads are part of a hoard of 14 found near Kalemouth in Roxburghshire. They were deposited sometime between 950 and 750 BC.

Although outwardly similar, the axes show different design and construction techniques.

Axeheads were symbols of power and prestige for a long period, probably with religious significance as well. They were sometimes used as offerings to the gods, as is almost certainly the case with this find, buried near the confluence of three rivers.
