Anvil

This small bronze anvil was found at Kyle of Oykel in Sutherland. It was used sometime between 1200 and 750 BC.

Copper alloy anvil from Kyle of Oykel

Early metalsmiths had a range of tools, including small anvils such as this one, hammers and chisels. With these tools, ingots of bronze, brass, lead, silver and gold could be hammered into sheets, cut to size and hammered to shape.
