Bronze ingot

This bronze ingot, roughly in the shape of an axehead, was found near Perth in Perthshire. It could have been hammered and shaped into a flat axehead. The ingot was used sometime between 2300 and 1700 BC.

Bronze ingot in the shape of a rude flat axe, plano-convex in section, from near Perth

Metal was a precious resource to early people. When an object broke, it could be melted down and remoulded into ingots. Ingots were useful for transporting metal between places, and for shaping into a variety of metal objects.
