Axehead or adzehead
Add to album

This bronze axe- or adzehead was found in Aberdeenshire. It could have been used as a tool for fine shaping of wood, or else as a weapon, or both, sometime between 2050 and 1750 BC.

The small axe- or adzehead has an expanded cutting edge. It was made by casting in a single-piece mould.

Axeheads and adzeheads were attached to the haft in different ways. Axeheads were hafted at 90° to the haft, sticking out from near the top. Adzeheads were fixed to the bottom of an L-shaped haft, and swung downwards.
