Sandstone mould for casting bronze axes and other objects
Add to album

This sandstone mould for casting bronze axes and other objects was found at Culbin Sands in Moray. It was used sometime between 2300 and 2000 BC.

The mould has matrices for three sizes of flat axeheads, a small implement of the flat axe form and other small objects.

Bronze objects could be made by melting bronze in a crucible in a furnace, and then casting it into shapes using moulds. At first, simple moulds like this one were used for casting flat objects. Later more complex moulds of stone and clay were developed.
