Stone mould for casting bronze objects

This stone mould was found at Trochrigg in Ayrshire. It has matrices on both sides. The mould was probably used to cast bronze objects, sometime between 200 BC and 1000 AD.

On this side, there are matrices for casting two bars of different sizes, both tapering at one end, two disc-shaped objects, and a small rectangular object with a handle. Some of the matrices are scored.

Bronze objects could be made by melting bronze in a crucible in a furnace, and then casting it into shapes using moulds. At first, simple moulds were used for making flat objects. Later more complex moulds of clay and stone were developed.
