Fragment of an iron sword
Add to album

This iron sword fragment was found at Stevenston Sands in North Ayrshire. It was made in the last two centuries BC. The form of the sword suggests that it is an Irish type.

The fragment is from the upper part of the sword blade. At the top, the concave ridge represents the edge of the missing guard.

Gradually swords replaced rapiers, daggers and dirks as the favoured weapon of the elite. With the arrival of iron, tougher and deadlier weapons could be made.
