Fragment of tile, made of verde antico

This fragment of tile, made of 'verde antico', was found at Hunday in Orkney. It is probably from an object obtained in Italy and taken back to Scotland as a pilgrim's souvenir, sometime between 550 and 1300.

Piece of verde-antico from Hunday, Orkney

'Verde antico' is a green porphyry floor and wall covering used by Roman and Byzantine rulers in Italy and the eastern Mediterranean. Fragments of 'verde antico' tiles were taken away by early Christian pilgrims, as they were regarded as being holy.
