This stone battle axe was found in a cist at Burnside Mill at Forfar in Angus. Although it could have functioned as a weapon, its main purpose was to be a symbol of power. It dates from between 2200 and 2000 BC.

Battle axes were adapted from Continental Europe around the time when metallurgy was introduced to Scotland.
