Five flint and chert arrowheads
These five flint and chert arrowheads were found in Kincardineshire (two examples), at Orford in Aberdeenshire, at Nairn in Highland and at Leadhills in Lanarkshire. They are fancy arrowheads, perhaps used for sport hunting sometime between 2500 and 900 BC.
The arrowheads are particularly well made. They have barbs, to help them stick in their prey, and tangs, to attach them to their wooden arrowshafts.
Around 2500 BC, a new archery kit was adopted in Scotland from continental Europe. The kit included a new type of arrowhead, barbed and tanged. These examples are particularly well made and are fancy versions of the normal type, made for show.
