Letter to the Peterhead Volunteers
Add to album

This letter, dated 1796, is to the commanding officer of the Peterhead Volunteers. It is from the commander-in-chief of the army in Scotland.

In the letter the commander-in-chief assures the commanding officer of his trust in the unit.

Fear of revolution and war with France resulted in Scots organising themselves into volunteer units. Eventually the government felt it was not enough to rely on volunteers and created a Scottish nationwide militia force in 1797.
