Pistol of the Breadalbane Fencibles

This steel pistol is of the 1st Battalion of the Breadalbane Fencibles and dates from 1793-1802. The pistol is known as a 'ramshorn butt' pistol.

The butt of the pistol is engraved with the motif of the regiment.

In the later 18th century the demand for the formation of a Scottish militia was rising. The government's refusal to carry this out forced the formation of special home defence, or 'fencible' regiments, raised by men of particular political influence.
