Map showing military roads

This map of the central Highlands of Scotland was published in January 1746.

The map shows the network of military roads constructed by General Wade between 1725 and 1736. The coloured lines indicate county boundaries.

Wade supervised the building of 250 miles of roads as part of the government effort to strengthen control of the Highlands. Ironically, in 1745 the Jacobite army used Wade's roads to outmanoeuvre Sir John Cope's government forces.
