Tobacco box, associated with Boer War

This tobacco box, containing four bars of tobacco, was one of a number sent out to troops serving in the Boer War in South Africa in November 1900 as a morale-boosting gesture from the Scottish Regiments' Gift Fund.

The small metal plate on each tobacco bar is stamped, 'F & J Smith's Yankee Plug'.

During the Boer War (1899-1902), the loss of men was so great that a school was founded in Dunblane in Perthshire for the orphaned sons of Scottish soldiers.
