Helmet of the Edinburgh Troop of Volunteer Cavalry

This helmet, dating from 1805 is of the Edinburgh Troop of Volunteer Cavalry. Fear of revolution and war with France resulted in Scots organising themselves into volunteer units.

Royal Edinburgh Yeomanry Cavalry - Helmet, 1797 - 1800

Many of the wealthier volunteer units set up by Scots in the 18th century indulged their military tastes with glamorous and expensive uniforms. The author Sir Walter Scott was an enthusiastic member of this cavalry unit.
