Buttons

These two buttons, one of white metal and one of brass, were worn by members of a special government department which maintained the network of roads and bridges built throughout Scotland.

The badges bear a four-leaved thistle and the inscription 'Highland Roads and Bridges'.

After the Jacobite Rising of 1745 anti-Scottish feeling was strong. Attempts to tame the Highlands included reintroducing the building of forts and roads which allowed for the quick movement of troops and resulted in improved communications.
