Pipe banner of the Breadalbane Fencibles

This pipe banner is of the Breadalbane Fencibles. It was raised in 1793 by the Earl of Breadalbane.

In the centre of the banner is the crest of the Earl of Breadalbane.

In the later 18th century the demand for the formation of a Scottish militia was rising. The government's refusal to carry this out forced the formation of special home defence, or 'fencible' regiments, raised by men of particular political influence.
